Introduction

The Tenorio National Park also hides one of Costa Rica´s treasures. The Rio Celeste (the blue river) is named after the color of its water, a bright jewel-blue, caused by many dissolved natural minerals, like cobalt. Hike through secondary and primary rainforest, home to pumas, tapirs and other animals. There are also streaming hot and cool springs of the local volcanoes, mineral mud pits and the blue lagoon of the Rio Celeste. A pool at the bottom of a waterfall allows the adventurous to swim in its blue waters.

La Carolina Lodge is a rustic guesthouse on the eastern slopes of Volcano Tenorio, located in a less traveled region of northwestern Costa Rica, amidst sunny jungles and volcanic mountains. Within this group of islands, we find the world-famous Isla San Lucas, site of the highest security prison in our history, where human rights did not exist for the prisoners. The time when the prison was in use is known as the dark age of our justice system.

Located 12 miles from Puntarenas, near Kuru and across from Playa Organo, Isla Tortuga (Turtle Island) has an area of 120 hectares with 4 main hills and 500 meters of beachfront. It is maintained as a park and has won the Bandera Azul (blue flag), a distinction conferred in our country for excellent ecological conservation.
